When it comes to financial aid, more students and families depend upon federal student loans to cover the costs of postsecondary education than any other source of financial aid. Although grants, scholarships and personal savings are vitally important to the ability of students and families to pay for postsecondary education, in the 2003-2004 academic year, nearly half of full-time, full-year undergraduates took out student loans. Nearly $39 billion in FFEL Program loans federal student loans were awarded in 2003-2004.
